Open to the public since June 2018, the Giacometti Institute permanently presents the artist's studio, all of the elements of which have been preserved by his widow, Annette Giacometti. Very fragile works in plaster and earth are presented, most of them never shown to the public, his work furniture or the original walls painted by the artist. The Institute strives to renew knowledge about the artist by organizing 4 temporary exhibitions each year which reveal all the richness of the artistic production of Alberto Giacometti, a world-renowned sculptor, but also a painter and draftsman.
The Giacometti Institute is housed in the former studio of the artist-decorator Paul Follot (1877-1941). The decorations of this listed private mansion, in Art-Deco style, have been preserved in their original layout and restored.
Paul Follot (1877-1941) was a cabinet maker, architect and decorator at the same time. He turns away from Art Nouveau to return to clean and elegant lines that express their decorative power through noble materials, such as precious wood, ivory and mother-of-pearl. He imagines complete interiors, from wall decorations - wood paneling, hangings and stained glass -, to furniture, including lighting, rugs, and door knobs. In 1911, he bought a plot in the Montparnasse district in order to build a private mansion, a true manifestation of his new style both from an architectural point of view and from an interior decoration point of view.
Entirely drawn and designed by the decorator, 5 rue Victor-Schœlcher, inaugurated in June 1914, is both the home of the Follot family, the artist's workspace, but also a real showroom where Paul Follot exhibits his creations and welcomes his customers. Its decorations, protected by the Historic Monuments, have been preserved in their original layout, constituting a complete and unique decorative ensemble in France.
The various exhibition rooms of the Giacometti Institute permanently present works by Alberto Giacometti, a unique selection of drawings in the graphic arts cabinet and a reference library on Giacometti and the artists of his period, as well as the personal books of the sculptor. With its artistic program renewed throughout the year, the Institute multiplies through its exhibitions, research and educational projects, views and subjects of exploration on the work of Alberto Giacometti.
Private visits, outside opening hours and accompanied by a mediator, can give access to the entire Institute. A guided tour by the current exhibition curator can also be scheduled. A presentation of unpublished drawings, photographs, correspondence or archives of the artist can also be organized by the Giacometti Foundation team.
The double reception room located on the second floor of the building, in the private spaces of the apartment that Paul Follot occupied with his wife, presents a style between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, ideal for an evening. Giacometti's work is present through all the plaster lights installed in these salons.
Two issues from the Institute, the Giacometti Lab is a versatile space dedicated to educational and event projects. Throughout the year, it hosts a program of workshops for adults or children, conferences, readings and art history seminars. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment (giant touch screen, microphones, speakers), it is the perfect setting for conferences, business seminars, or group workshops. Tailor-made workshops can also be organized on request by the Institute's teaching team.
Finally, referenced providers can be recommended to you and respond to your wishes quickly for your privatization requests. Established in the XIVe district, we make it a point of honor to solicit local food trades - especially on rue Daguerre.
